The Fruit of Goodness
The sixth aspect of the Fruit of the Spirit is Goodness. This is one that shows most obviously the need for the power of God’s grace upon us and the help of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. Man by nature is not good. Rom. 3:12, 8:8 and Prov. 2:12. Only when we become partakers of the divine nature can we do “good” in God’s sight. Phil. 2:13 and Eph. 2:10. Consider three things about Goodness.
- THE IMPORTANCE OF GOODNESS.
- It shows forth God’s praise. 1Pet. 2:9 and 12.
- It is evidence of true salvation. James 2:17-18.
- It is what Jesus would do. Acts 10:38.
- It is profitable for men. Tit. 3:8.
2. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF GOODNESS.
A. It is unselfish. Phil. 2:4.
B. It is sacrificial. Rom. 15:1-3.
C. It is consistent. Gal. 6:9.
D. It is impartial. Matt. 5:44-45.
3. THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOODNESS.
A. In church and among brethren. Gal. 6:10. Heb. 10:24-25.
B. As parents. Prov. 13:22. Titus 2:3-5.
C. With pure religion. James 1:27.
D. On the job. Eph. 6:6-8.
E. With good citizenship. Rom. 13:1 and 3.
CONCLUSION: It is the duty of every blood bought born again believer to show forth the Fruit of the Spirit. We being depraved and dead in sin have no inclination to do what is good in the eyes of God. Therefore it is all the more important that we manifest goodness to His honor and glory. True happiness for the believer is to express the goodness of God in his heart. Matt. 12:35. Prov. 15:23. 17:22. AMEN.
