The Deity of Christ

Titus 2:13-15.

This is a great doctrinal passage. There is a critical need today for more doctrinal preaching in our churches. We are commanded to do this in the Great Commission. Without a doubt, the doctrine of grace as been neglected for several years, and the teaching of local church truth is something that sounds strange to most Christians. Another foreign sounding thing in our churches is the teaching of Sanctification. But I want to think on the subject of “The Great God and our Savior Jesus Christ” or the fundamental doctrine of “The Deity of Christ.”

Many deny this truth: Atheists, (they say there is no God) and Infidels, (they just don’t believe.) All non-Christian religions in the world deny it: Moslems, Judaists, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. Then there are all the false cults that we won’t take time to mention, who deny that Christ as the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Col. 2:9. We even have a host of Christ deniers under the name of Christianity included among the Catholics, Protestants, and yes even among the Baptists. (True Baptists by the way are not Protestants and have NEVER identified with the universal hierarchy of either the Eastern or Western branch of Catholicism.) We call the Christ deniers in Christianity “modern liberals”. IF the average Southern Baptist were more informed about modern liberals in their theological seminaries, they would withdraw from the convention and quit sending money to pay the salaries of Christ deniers in their preacher schools.

Defenders of the Deity of Christ are greatly out-numbered by deniers in these modern times. There are only two camps on this issue. Everyone is in one camp or the other. Some who think they are defenders are actually deniers. Pay close attention. You may discover that you are in the wrong camp. Let us consider the two camps as we find them in the New Testament.

I. THE DENIERS OF THE DEITY OF CHRIST.

1. Satan. Matt 4:3,6.
2. Unbelieving Jews. Jn 5:18, 10:33.
3. Scribes and Pharisees. Lk 5:21.
4. The Crucifixion crowd. Lk 23:35-39.

II. THE DEFENDERS OF THE DEITY OF CHRIST.

1. Peter. Matt 16:16.
2. The Demoniac. Mk 5:7.
3. The Centurion. Mk 15:39.
4. Nathaniel. Jn 1:49.
5. The Samaritans. Jn 4:42.
6. Martha. Jn 11:27.
7. Thomas. Jn 20:28.

CONCLUSION: The term Son of man has to do with His humanity. The term Son of God has to do with His deity. Which camp are you in? If you have never publicly professed the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, you are a denier. Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed… Also, I Jn 5:10. To deny the deity of Christ is to call God a liar. Take sides with the believers and stand up and be counted for the Lord today. None but believers are true defenders of the doctrine of Christ. Are you a believer? Declare it clearly if you are. Rom 10:11. AMEN.
